Scale removal from cooling system.?
I have a 1993 Mustang LX 2.3L and would like to know if there's a way to completely remove scale from the entire cooling system, without dissolving the rad and heater core. I understand the vinegar-coffeemaker trick is a bad idea here. I even noticed a small amount in the block too, and I'm concerned this will act as a thermal insulator somewhat. I have flushed the system well the best I could and used distilled water in the mix, but I'm concerned about the solid deposits that don't float away. Is there something that will dissolve only this?
...I also tried a few solutions from parts stores but they always say they flush loose scale and to not use them for more than 10 min. I think it will take at least 10 min for concentrated CLR to remove something like this! (no, I won't use CLR lol)
Look for Prestone Super Cooling System Cleaner at auto-parts stores and Autozone for sure! Drain and flush the system with a Prestone Flush Kit spliced in the return line from the heater core. Remove the coolant recovery tank an brush it out with round stiff brush with a long rod on one end. Use dish water detergent to clean the tank.
Dump two yellow 33 oz. plastic cans of the flush chemical in the radiator and fill the system with water. If you're unable to get the two bottles in the radiator start the car till the thermostat opens and the cleaner/water circulates. This will discharge any air in the system. Make sure your coolant recovery tank is nearly full of cleaner and water. Unlike other cleaners the bottle says to actually drive your car with the cleaner in it for up to 200 miles.
At the end of the driving period use the installed flush and drain kit with your garden hose to flush with water and cleaner out. If the motor block has drain plugs on each side remove them so all the water in removed. Do not use pre-mixed antifreeze, it's a rip-off. **Fill 50% of the total capacity of your system with 100% antifreeze first. Doing it this way assures you that you're getting all trhe antifreeze in you need as trapped water pockets are still in the system before you start. Install a new closed system radiator cap.
If you'd rather use something stronger to clean the cooling system GM makes a product called Heavy Duty Cooling System Cleaner Part # 88861344. It's avalable at any GM dealer. Follow the directions carefully as this stuff works well.
