advice on purchasing new electric coffee maker?
we have to buy a new coffee maker. our problem is we both want our coffee HOT! when i go to starbucks for a latte i always ask them to make it 200* - i like my coffee really hot.
what coffee maker do you use? is it a drip or percolator? does it have a burner to keep coffee hot? why do you like it? and does it keep the coffee in the pot piping hot until you are ready for your next cup?
help!

If you want tounge scalding hot coffee - you might want to check out what is called a French Press. It consists of a cylinder made of either glass or plastic that fits in a frame of either plastic or metal. It also includes a plunger that fits over the top of the cylinder. To make coffee, you put an amount of grounds into the bottom of the cylinder, pour in boiling hot water, and place the lid with plunger over the top of the cylinder. Your coffee making water should have been at a rolling boil for a good minute on the stove top before adding to the French Press; microwaved water at a rolling boil can be used too. When the coffee grounds have brewed enough (similar to making tea) then, you push the plunger down until it traps and is tight on top of the grounds themselves. Depending upon just how long you brew the coffee, you can have darned near 200 degree coffee in stregnths and flavors similar to Starbucks.
I prefer the glass cylinder with chromed, metal frame. I prefer the medium sized pot which is probably 6 coffee cups worth, about 4 mugs worth. Bodum makes several including the one meeting my preference description. However, there are a couple of other brands out there too. If you heat the glass cylinder with hot/boiling water first, the coffee is and will remain hotter; just before makeing the actual coffee, dump the hot water, add your grounds, and immediately pour in your boiling coffee water. If you put your brewed, hot coffee into a heated, metal thermos about the size of the volume you're pouring in, you can keep what you don't pour directly into your cup/mug pretty darned hot.
Brewing a consistient pot of coffee in a French Press is a little more difficult as it seems that there are a number of variants that can affect the outcome ranging from temperatures, water, grind size, grind age, amount of coffee, and time brewed. On the other hand, if you brew your grounds a little longer, you can seriously reduce the amount used and still get a decent cup of coffee. Or, you can go "full flavored" and with the correct type of coffee bean, end up with an pretty decent cup of expresso; different than the expresso machine type but still good. Theoretically, you should use a coarser grind of coffee in a French Press but, I like a medium to medium-fine grind from fresh, just ground beans.
Rather than using one of the larger French Presses when there are "extra cups" to fill, I prefer to use two of the size described above. A French Press can even make a Folgers type coffee taste more like a fresh ground coffee.
To keep a drip or percolator coffee hot without scorching or burning it, use a decent quality metal thermos immediately after it is brewed. - Well, after you've poured your cup first.
